Tobacco news:
DAVID WALSH: Commentary: Marlboro Man may be smirking
The Marlboro Man never gave us one iota of information about tobacco. He never once offered a fact-based argument in favor of tobacco. Yet he's the advertising icon of the century. Why? Because he aimed for the feelings.
The truth is that feelings - not facts - are the powerful influencers. That is why advertisers work to create an emotional state. Then when we're in that state, they link up their product or message. That's why it is effective. The message literally slips in underneath the radar of critical thought and judgment. Florida seems to have learned a lesson from the Marlboro Man. Last year the state launched an aggressive, edgy counter-advertising campaign funded by some of the proceeds of its tobacco settlement. In less than a year, smoking dropped by 19 percent among middle-schoolers and 8 percent among high schoolers.
By contrast, Minnesota's youth tobacco use rates have increased by 70 percent since 1992. Yet some of our elected representatives still resist using even a tiny percentage of the tobacco settlement for counter-advertising. Hey, Marlboro Man, get that smirk off your face!
